About

The Picz.us link shortener is built for people who would like to share their internet URLs on social media services like twitter and facebook, whilst encouraging their visitors to browse and purchase related images from online stock photography libraries.

When you sign up, you add your affiliate ID to your profile for each of the agencies in the system, if you make a short URL to any image, search page, or other section on an included image agency website, your link is updated to include your referral/affiliate ID automatically and the visitor is sent directly to the long URL (like bit.ly). Your affiliate code is added to every single visit for any included agency site (ie. Picz.us gets no exposure-share on direct agency links).

If you shorten a link to any other site (picz.us would like to become the main URL shortener for image-focussed links) then a small top-bar is added (like ow.ly) where the visitor can access links for related images to the included image licensing agencies. For toolbar views, your affiliate ID is included on an even-split, ie: half the buttons it’s your code, the other half it’s mine :)

You can signup on the picz.us front page, then add your affiliate codes to your profile to start earning for you by referring image buyers to find images related to the link in microstock photography, illustration, and maybe video agency websites in future too.

If you would like to use picz.us to automatically build short affiliate/referral links for any sites not already included, let me know and I’ll add support for them.
I’ve just finished the main code, so please let me know if you find any problems, questions or suggestions.

I added my affiliate codes but I can’t see them when short url turned to original url after sharing and clicking the url.

Where (and when) your affiliate code is added to the link depends on which type of site you are linking to. If you link to one of the agency sites (for example to promote your own portfolio) the affiliate code is added when the viewer visits the link, some sites then ‘mod_rewrite’ it out of the url (they read it and redirect to a page which doesn’t have it attached) or change it’s format. The link is only modified when visiting it from the short-url, not from the long-url displayed on the results page, the affiliate code is added at view-time so if you changed your affiliate codes or account names, your old links will still work (you will not have a lot of useless links on forums/emails/etc).
If you create a short-url to a site not belonging to one of the agencies (ie. to show off your own website or tell someone about a blog post somewhere), the affiliate code is not added to the resulting short-url at all, it instead adds a toolbar to the top of the page which contains image-search suggestions related to that page, the buttons in that toolbar will contain your affiliate codes when used, in this case the agency links are generated at display-time of the toolbar.
    Does that help?
    Thanks :)

So, I added my affiliate code for Istockphoto but when I shorten a link from my portfolio and go to it some other members affiliate code is added instead of mine. Maybe it’s something that has turned wrong after the F5 update on Istocks side but I think it needs to be looked into as I do think it’s useless to use this url shortener if I’m to promote somebody else.

    Heya Jonny

I checked the database but it doesn’t show any shortened URLs created by your account. (Were you definitely logged in?)
It does have your iStock referral id registered correctly.
Can you let me know what link you tried so I can check it out?

Yes, I’m logged in. 10q is one of the short urls I created but all links I create sets the referral to some Luca B instead of me.

    Excellent, thanks for the info.
I’ve had a look and it seems you and he were sharing the same ‘public signature’ (the random key used when accessing picz.us via the api).
It looks like I had a bug in the way it was generated which just happened to base the random number off the same key for 4 registrations. It’s a weird one, but I think it’s fixed now.

Creating links via the api (like on the picNiche Share button) may not work for you, but if you logout of the site then log back in it should reset the one local to your browser session and links shortened in the website should work ok :)
I’ll work on getting the api-based stuff fixed asap (You can try resetting your api-key locally by opening “about:config” in firefox (after logging out of picz.us) and resetting “extensions.picnichebar.piczus.signature”), the next hit of the share button should have the toolbar think you’ve never hit it before (so you’ll get the info message/confirmation dialog), but you might also need to clear your cookie for the website for this to work :/ I’m looking into it at the mo.

Sorry about the issue, and a big thanks for finding it :)
